Upper Back Pain

RapidForce X Shape - Muscle Support & Pain Relief System

RapidForce® Shapes stabilize and support the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the upper back. The X Shape is designed to reduce swelling by gently lifting the skin above the pain point, which can help circulate blood, oxygen, fluids, and nutrients to an injury site.

Although somewhat uncommon, upper back pain can cause serious discomfort for both athletes and non-athletes. The upper back, also known as the thoracic spine, spans from the base of the neck to just below the ribcage.

Upper back injuries are unusual because this area, in general, remains relatively stationary, even during physical activity. The upper back’s main anatomical purpose is to provide structural support for the neck, spine, and ribcage, so the more rigid and immobile, the better. However, when the muscles or tissue in the upper back are torn, strained, or damaged, people often report stiffness, numbness, spasms, pain when straightening the back, pain when breathing, or pain that “radiates” to the neck, shoulders, or arms.

Upper back discomfort is usually caused by improper technique or sudden twisting or bending, usually by overstretching or overextending the back muscles during intense physical activity, such as weightlifting, obstacle-course racing, and volleyball. But it can also stem from poor posture, which is why pain in the upper back is equally as common in people who sit most of the day and frequent users of computers and handheld devices.

The RapidForce® X Shape is designed to help reduce pain in the upper back, especially those stemming from muscle strains or minor tissue damage. The X Shape has a central core that adheres to the skin directly above the spine “adjacent” to pain point, and the four arms are stretched outwards, stabilizing the injury site and creating a support system for the muscle, tissue, ligaments, and tendons. The X Shape is also designed to gently lift the upper layers of skin, which is intended to create more subcutaneous space for blood, oxygen, and healing fluids to reach the injury site.

RapidForce® Shapes are unlike any other pain-relief product on the market today. Each Shape’s patented design was carefully developed and perfected by a team of physical therapists, athletic trainers, engineers, and an ultrasound technician who sought to create a product that supports the muscles and helps relieve pain caused by muscle, tendon, joint, and ligament injuries. RapidForce® Shapes are used by athletes at all levels, including professional athletes, semi-pro athletes, and people who lead or want to lead an active lifestyle.

Time it Right

While RapidForce® Shapes can be applied at any time, they should be applied 1–2 hours before beginning strenuous physical activity. The Shapes can start working is as little as two hours, but some applications take up to four hours.

Prep Skin Thoroughly

Wash and dry the skin to remove oils, moisture, and dirt. Trim or shave body hair; this helps create a more secure bond and more comfortable removal. Apply the provided Skin Tac liquid adhesive wipe. Allow 30 seconds for it to dry.

Customize Stretch

Secure the Shape’s central core to the most painful spot. For daily wear or moderate-to-light athletics, a mild stretch of 1/2” is ideal. Application instructions vary based on Shape, so read and follow the instructions mailed with your shape(s).

Secure Bond

With both the Shape and the skin at room temperature, carefully begin applying the shape. Once the shape is secure, rub it vigorously to maximize adhesive bond to skin.

  1. 1. Apply the center of the X Shape

    1. Apply the center of the X Shape

Peel off the backing of the central core of the X Shape and place it over the upper spine, between the shoulder blades. Ensure the shape’s center-most point is adjacent to the pain point. Press to secure the bond.

  2. 1. Apply the center of the X Shape

    2. Apply the upper arms - 1/2" Stretch

Peel off the middle backing of one of the upper arms of the X Shape, leaving the end tab in place. The shoulders should be in resting position, in good posture (ie. not leaning forward), prior to arm applications.  While stabilizing the center with one hand, customize the stretch based on the intensity of your activity and pull across the top of the shoulder blade toward the tip of the shoulder. Smooth the fabric onto the skin, moving from the center of the X Shape outwards. Remove the backing he from the end tab and place on the skin. Do not stretch this small piece. Press over the entire arm of the X Shape for about 10 seconds to secure the bond. Repeat for second upper arm in the opposite direction.

  3. 1. Apply the center of the X Shape

    3. Apply the lower arms - 1/2" Stretch

Apply the long arms so they are just under the bottom of the shoulder blade. Apply both lower arms using the same application approach as described in Step 2.

  4. 1. Apply the center of the X Shape

    4. Feel Relief and Remove

You may begin feeling relief within a few hours. However, it could take up to 24 hours. RapidForce shapes can provide pain relief and muscle support for up to five days but can be removed at any time. To remove, pull from the end of the arms to the center. If hair is present, pull in the direction of the hair’s growth to reduce discomfort. For easier removal, use mild warm water in the shower and then remove the shape slowly.
