The iliotibial band or IT band is the largest swathe of tissue in the body and runs from the pelvis/outer thigh area to just below the knee. Iliotibial band syndrome can be one of the stubbornest and most debilitating leg pain conditions due to the band’s essentialness in both basic and complex leg movements.
 
IT band syndrome is chronic inflammation or swelling of the tissue and/or tendons that make up the band, usually due to overuse, repetitious flexion or extension, or improper stretching or conditioning. The pain will strike when an athlete is running, digging the heel into the ground, or squatting, which is why it’s most often found in runners, hikers, bicyclists, and weightlifters.
 
IT band syndrome symptoms include stinging, needle-like pricks, a snapping or popping sensation, pain that radiates to (but is not located in) the thigh or hip, and pain that worsens during exercise or stair climbing. The pain will be located on the lateral side of the knee, inside of the knee, or just above the knee bump. Contrary to popular belief, pain in the thigh or hip is not indicative of IT band syndrome; pain stemming from this condition will only be felt in or around the knee.
 
The V Shape is designed to help reduce pain in the lateral side of the knee, especially pain from IT band syndrome. The V Shape adheres to the skin above the pain point, which stabilizes the inflamed or irritated area, and its dual arms are stretched outwards, providing structural support. Key to efficacy is the mechanical lift the V Shape provides, which lifts the upper layers of the skin and is intended to create more space for healing fluids and nutrients to reach the injury site and for blood and oxygen to flow more efficiently.

Time it Right

While RapidForce® Shapes can be applied at any time, they should be applied 1–2 hours before beginning strenuous physical activity. The Shapes can start working is as little as two hours, but some applications take up to four hours.

Prep Skin Thoroughly

Wash and dry the skin to remove oils, moisture, and dirt. Trim or shave body hair; this helps create a more secure bond and more comfortable removal. Apply the provided Skin Tac liquid adhesive wipe. Allow 30 seconds for it to dry.

Customize Stretch

Secure the Shape’s central core to the most painful spot. For daily wear or moderate-to-light athletics, a mild stretch of 1/2” is ideal. Application instructions vary based on Shape, so read and follow the instructions mailed with your shape(s).

Secure Bond

With both the Shape and the skin at room temperature, carefully begin applying the shape. Once the shape is secure, rub it vigorously to maximize adhesive bond to skin.

    2. Apply the center of the V Shape

    Peel off the backing of the center of the V Shape and place over the bump in the knee. Press to secure the bond.

    3. Apply arms of the V Shape - 1/2" Stretch

    Peel off the middle backing of the outer arm of the V Shape, leaving the end tab in place. While stabilizing the central core with one hand, customize stretch based on intensity of activity and place upward, alongside the IT band. Smooth the fabric onto the skin, moving from the center of the Shape outwards. Remove the backing from the end tab and place on the skin. Do not stretch this small piece. Press over the entire arm of the V Shape for about 10 seconds to secure the bond. Apply the other arm of the V Shape in the same fashion but in the opposite direction.

    4. Feel Relief and Remove

    You may begin feeling relief within a few hours. However, it could take up to 24 hours. RapidForce shapes can provide pain relief and muscle support for up to five days but can be removed at any time. To remove, pull from the end of the arms to the center. If hair is present, pull in the direction of the hair’s growth to reduce discomfort. For easier removal, use mild warm water in the shower and then remove the shape slowly.
